AMN Action Roundup #1Welcome to the first Action Roundup from for Anti-Militarist Network. To have your events or actions covered either add them to Indymedia UK under the anti-militarism topic, or email us. Next Gathering in Brighton – 2nd – 3rd May 2009The anti-militarist network invites all who are prepared to take action against global militarism for a two day conference at the Cowley Club Social Centre in Brighton on the 2nd and 3rd of May 2009. A provisional timetable for the weekend is now available. G20 protests hit London and NATO not allowed to celebrate their 60th in peaceLast week the G20 leaders met in London to discuss the economic crisis, and how much of the public’s money they were going to plough into the financial institutions that are responsible for this hole mess in the first place. They were meet by thousands who had far more important issues to raise, such as climate change, border controls and war. On the 1st of April crowds descended on the Bank of England as part of G20 Meltdown (IMC reports). The city centre was brought to a stand still and two banks had their windows smashed. A few days later NATO were attempting to celebrate their 60th year of military supremacy in the French city of Strasbourg. Tens of thousands flooded the city to protest through a diversity of tactics and to stop NATO celebrating in quietly (pictures on IMC 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9). AMN Days of Action Announced – 3-6th AprilNO TO WAR! A CALL TO ACTION! 3-6th OF APRIL! At the beginning of April NATO meets in Strasbourg to celebrate its 60th Anniversary. This is no time to celebrate. This is a time to take action. The movement against militarism in the UK is building. AMN Gathering – 1st March – EdinburghIn November 2008 a gathering of reflection and planning for a new anti-militarist movement took place in Edinburgh. Having taken a critical look at the current state of the anti-militarist/anti-war/peace movement in the UK whilst celebrating the movement’s successes and analysing its shortcomings, the Anti- Militarist Network (AMN) was formed. Join us for the second gathering to further discuss how we can build an anti-militarist movement capable of resisting and stopping current and future militarism and aggressive state violence. This gathering will also continue to bring together a broad-based network of groups and individuals to begin mobilising for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly that will take place 13th-17th November 2009. Anti-Militarist action intensifiesWith the conflict in Gaza raging on anti-militarists from across the UK have intensified their actions. Following on from the smashing action in Brighton activists in Newcastle blockaded a BAe Systems plant, and in Cornwall activists blockaded an small arms company. Meanwhile in Bristol activists are still occupying a roof. The action started last year, on the 9th of December. Meanwhile over a dozen Universities have been blockaded across the UK. ITT/EDO MBM Decommissioned in Solidarity with GazaOn Saturday morning, activists entered EDO MBM and barricaded themselves inside the factory. The protestors then proceeded to decommission EDO by causing extensive damage to offices and to equipment used to make arms, including the ‘zero retention force arming units’ and ‘ejector release unit 151′ which are supplied to the Israeli Air Force. Over £250,000 worth of property damage was incurred, whilst the monetary repercussions to EDO through cancelled contracts and paying employees will clearly dent the already declining financial status of the company. Brighton-based Arms-Dealers complicit in the ongoing massacre in the Gaza stripEDO/ITT are a Brighton-based arms manufacturer known to supply to the US, UK and Israeli military. EDO/ITT’s military products include bomb racks, release clips and arming mechanisms for warplanes, including Israel’s F16 jets. Recent reports and photographs from the Gaza Strip clearly show F16′s carrying out air strikes on cities and towns in Gaza, killing innocent civilians. Currently the death toll in the Gaza Strip since beginning of Israel’s offensive is approaching 600, whilst wounded amounts to over 2,500. Raytheon roof protestThree hardy protestors have spent the last nine days camping on the roof of Raytheon’s Bristol office; they intend to stay on the roof until the New Year! They are braving sub-zero temperatures, and are relying on the support of ordinary Bristolians, to drive Raytheon out of Bristol. Raytheon is the fifth largest military contracter in the world, and the maker of “Bunker Buster” bombs, Tomahawk and Patriot missiles. A number of their missiles can be loaded with cluster bombs. Raytheon have annual revenues of around USD 20 billion, including huge contracts in Afghanistan and Iraq, and have regularly been found guilty of illegal activity. |
